Webex simultaneous interpretation lets organisers assign human interpreters to language channels so attendees can choose what they hear. Webex provides the meeting controls, not the interpreting staff. Before configuring an event, establish the required languages, interpreter team, host responsibilities and access needs. Check your site's meeting platform as well as its settings.
Enable the feature and assign interpreters
Cisco's Control Hub instructions place the simultaneous interpretation toggle under Management, then Organization Settings. Enabling it applies across the organisation's Webex sites; Cisco directs customers wanting selective site availability to their account team. Ask the administrator to confirm the intended configuration before scheduling.
- Schedule the meeting or webinar and open its advanced options.
- Enable simultaneous interpretation, select language channels and enter interpreter email addresses.
- Send the language directions, agenda, terminology and joining instructions to the interpreting team.
- Test the host, interpreter and listener experience together before the event.
Cisco's preassignment guide says interpreters must sign in to their Webex accounts to receive their assigned role when joining. This requirement describes the preassignment workflow; it should not be confused with the host assigning someone during a session. The scheduler used also matters: Cisco's overview notes that preassignment is unavailable when scheduling in the Meetings desktop app.
The Webex interpretation overview confirms that hosts can add channels and assign participants as interpreters during the meeting. Interpreters can change interpretation direction and hand off to colleagues. Agree staffing and breaks with the team instead of assuming one person or one fixed rotation suits every assignment.
Separate meeting-platform restrictions from general limits
On the Webex Suite meeting platform, Cisco supports interpretation in scheduled meetings with a one-time link, not Personal Room meetings. Its documentation also describes Personal Room assignment for other supported configurations after the meeting starts. Verify which platform your site uses rather than applying one rule to all Webex meetings.
Cisco's overview documents these operational limits:
- Webinars in webcast view do not support simultaneous interpretation.
- Enabling it during a meeting or when scheduling from the Webex site prevents creating breakout or practice sessions.
- Recordings capture the original audio, not the interpreted channels.
- Interpreters cannot share their screens or be changed to cohost or presenter.
- Participants must use computer audio rather than telephone call-in or call-me audio.
For a workshop or webinar rehearsal, arrange another supported session and test that arrangement with the team. A text transcript is not an interpreted audio recording. Before making a separate recording, agree permissions, access, storage and the delivery format with everyone responsible for the event.
The listener instructions describe a 200-participant-and-device limit for the Webex App path, while saying that limit does not apply to participants joining through Webex Meetings. Do not present it as a universal event-capacity limit. The overview also scopes its Webex for Government exclusion to Webex App. Confirm the actual joining clients before advertising compatibility.
Explain the listener's audio controls accurately
Attendees choose an interpretation language and can balance interpreter audio against original audio. Cisco's listener instructions say original audio returns after a few seconds when the interpreter stops and the original audio is in the attendee's preferred interpretation language. It is not an unconditional fallback whenever an interpreter pauses.
Rehearse with listeners who need interpretation, including anyone using room equipment. Check what they hear during handovers, prerecorded material and speaker-language changes. Give attendees a short instruction for finding their channel and contacting support if it is silent.
Distinguish human channels from automated translation
Webex real-time translation produces translated captions and requires a paid add-on licence. Cisco lists 16 spoken languages and over 120 caption translation languages with that licence, with up to 15 unique caption languages used at once. Without it, transcription availability does not imply translated-caption access.
Cisco's February 2026 Translator Agent announcement described planned Calling availability and later Meetings support. An announcement is not proof of current availability in a particular Meetings account. Confirm release and account availability before including automated translated audio in an event plan.
Where MirrorCaption fits
MirrorCaption can help someone follow an informal spoken call using automated transcription and translation. In a supported desktop browser, explicitly share the Webex meeting tab with audio. This does not automatically capture the native Webex application, add an interpretation channel or supply a qualified interpreter. Language, audio quality and connection affect accuracy and delay; do not assume guaranteed sub-second output.
Check organisational requirements before sending meeting audio to another service. Use qualified assistance when the encounter requires it, and do not substitute speech captions for signed-language interpretation. For broader planning, see interpreting software categories, how simultaneous interpretation works and Google Meet interpretation options.

Try MirrorCaptionFrequently asked questions
Does Webex supply the human interpreters?
No. The simultaneous interpretation feature provides language channels and interpreter roles. The organiser must arrange suitable interpreters and confirm the feature is available and enabled for the Webex site.
Must preassigned Webex interpreters sign in?
Yes. Cisco says preassigned interpreters must sign in to their Webex accounts to receive the interpreter role when joining. Hosts can also assign participants during a meeting; preassignment and in-meeting assignment are separate workflows.
Does a Webex recording include interpretation channels?
Cisco documents that recordings of meetings with simultaneous interpretation capture only the original audio. Plan a separate approved arrangement if you need an interpreted record.
Can simultaneous interpretation run in Webex breakout sessions?
Cisco says you cannot create breakout or practice sessions when simultaneous interpretation is enabled during the meeting or when scheduling from the Webex site. Plan and rehearse a separate arrangement for those activities.
How many interpretation channels can Webex support?
The Cisco overview and setup pages reviewed here do not specify a numeric maximum. Confirm the supported configuration for your site and event with Cisco before promising a particular channel count.
